Podiatry is that profession that is concerned with the prevention and treatment of disordered of the foot and lower limb. Podiatry practitioners treat everything from ingrown toes nails to corns to heel pain to ankle injuries. The future for podiatry is bright as most of the foot problems that occur are in the older population and that portion of the population is growing. A career in podiatry is somewhat different in each country and the scope of practice for podiatry is very different in different countries. In the USA, podiatry is a 4 yr post-graduate degree followed by a 2-3yr surgical residency. In the UK and Australia, podiatry is a 3-4 year undergraduate degree with the surgical training being a post-graduate option. For Podiatry inĀ Canada, there is a mixture of the UK and USA type programs. In some other countries, Podiatry is a 2 year diploma program and their scope of practice is very limited. A podiatry clinic can be found in most major hospitals around the world, except in some countries in Asia and eastern Europe.
