There are many ways to determine the posture or alignment of the foot. The problem with most of the current methods is that they may not be reliable and they may only rely on a single observation or measurement. The Foot Posture Index was designed to overcome some of these shortcomings of other methods. The Foot Posture Index has been shown to be reliable. The Foot Posture index consists of a number of observations (rather than just one) and uses a composite score of those different observations. The advantage of this is that it incorporates deviations in all three body planes so the Foot Posture Index covers arch height, medial bulging in the midfoot and transverse plane movement of the forefoot relative to the rearfoot.
