Cycling

Cycling is a popular sport and despite it not being a weightbearing one, they do load the pedals with substantial force and so do get problems with the foot. Foot posture or alignment is also going to be factor in how they generate force through the pedal and will impact on biomechanical efficiency. Cycling biomechanics, especially the setup of the bike gets a lot of discussion on cycling forums. From a podiatry perspective the use of cycling foot orthotics is challenging when it comes to treating problems of the foot. Foot orthotics for cycling need to be cut down enough to fit in the cycling shoe, but also be substantial enough to have a therapeutic effect. Unfortunately at the end of the day, it comes down to compromises. Mortons neuroma in cycling is common. Cycling poses a number of challenges in podiatry sports medicine practice.
