Chilblains are a common problem in cooler climates. Chilblains are a painful inflammatory reaction usually on the toes in response to the accumulation of waste products when the circulation does not respond properly to changes in temperature. When the foot gets cold, the microcirculation normally closes up to conserve body heat, but they should open up again when the foot is warmed. In a chilblain the microcirculation does not open as quickly as it should on re-warming. As a result a chilblain develops. The best way to deal with chilblains is to not let the foot become cold in the first place. If the foot does become cold, the prevention of the chilblains is to make sure the foot warms up slowly, so that the microcirculation can open appropriately. If a chilblain does develop, care must be taken of it. Emollients often help. If the skin around a chilblain is broken, then it needs a proper wound dressing.
