Alexa is a company that provide a toolbar or plugin that users can install on their web browser. When a website is visited information is sent to Alexa and the Alexa rankings are determined. The Alexa website rankings are what each website gets based on the number of visitors o the site with the toolbar installed. The lowest Alexa ranking is 1 and the highest is greater than 5 million. Web site owners all want their own sites to have the lowest Alexa ranking as this give the impression that their website actually gets a lot of visitors. This can be important for trust. The problem is that it can be faked to some extent. All that needs to be done is install the toolbar and visit your own site as much as possible and this will artificially inflate the Alexa website rankings.
